Chapter 6

Doctor Charlie McKay

He came to Beaches Hospital at 4am to check on me after a fight at Pete's in 1984. He told me to jack off once when my prostate was enlarged. My sister, Rosemary, remembers him smoking cigarettes while treating her. He had a colored waiting room, not because he was prejudiced, but because his white customers required it. He had Doug Akin fill in the swimming pool in his back yard, after he came home one day to see Sandy, Malcolm Marvin, and Freddy Frazer jumping from the roof into the pool. He was married and divorced several times. He adopted a young boy named Vince, in the 80's, I believe.

Facebook comments from those who knew Charlie, a one of a kind Beaches icon:

Doc Mckay.....my doctor into teens.....his best line : "son, everything I do hurts" !! and it did too.......

Dr McKay was really not into the bedside manner thing but was one of the best diagnosticians ever. Dr Roberts delivered my sisters oldest daughter . Dr Cone was a wild man!! I remember when he finally got married and would pull his kids around in a little covered wagon. My Mom did Mrs Cones hair for a long time . She was a lovely lady.

Dr. McKay made many a house call when I and my 3 sisters were little.

Dr. McKay is the first real person that told me that I was OK, really, like no hang ups or phobias or anything like that. Makes me wonder how much worst kids were than me. Scary! LOL. Love and miss him!

I was scared to death of Dr. McKay! I got pneumonia when I was in 3rd grade and had to get a shot from him every day for 3 weeks. One time I went to his office and passed out when I was walking down the hall. Woke up with him standing over me holding smelling salts under my nose! I also remember him making house calls.

Dr. McKay was our family doctor and always took care of me during my numerous strep throat infections. I have never found another doctor that I trusted as much as I trusted him to find and cure any medical problems I might have. I suspect he was flexible about payments too because our health issues didn't always coincide with payday for my Mom.

Dr. Mc.Cay - 1975. He had a black nurse. I got a bad sunburn. I went to him. He told me that if I didn't stay out of the sun I would turn as black as his nurse (she was standing right there). She just laughed.

Dr. McKay was my friend. As a little girl I spent most days after school at home in Selva with his children Claire and Collins. I remember his housekeepet but I don't remember her name. She would be there when we came home frim school. She would make dinner and Dr. McKay eould take her home when he came in from work. Claire loved horses and we would ride a few days a week. Where is Claire?

He was a very respectful man.

I am not sure Dr. McKay would have survived HIPAA. There were no secrets in his office as he talked at the top of his lungs. You knew all the medical problems of the people in the exam rooms next to you.

I think Dr McKay's son Collins became a doctor and lives in New Orleans
